Hoi An World Heritage site launches tourism month
05/06/2006 (GMT+7)
A tourism month was launched on June 4 at the ancient town of Hoi An, a World Heritage site in the central province of Quang Nam.
Twenty events will be held during the month, under the theme "Hoi An - Summer Feelings". In additional to traditional activities, the third annual festival also features new attractions, such as performances of the traditional "gong" instruments unique to the Central Highlands, elephant hunting, and World Cup cheering nights. Additionally, an international sculpture camp in Hoi An titled "Hoi An variations" has wrapped up with 17 works created after one month. The two events in Hoi An are within the framework of a national tourism programme entitled "Quang Nam, One Destination - Two World Heritage Sites", which was structured according to the National Tourism Year theme of "Cultural Heritage, Folk Festivals, Traditional Craft Villages and Eco-tourism." The other World Heritage site in Quang Nam is the My Son sanctuary.
At the end of National Tourism Year 2006, the Quang Nam, One Destination - Two World Heritage Sites national festival will conclude with emotional celebrations such as Happy New Year 2007 and a 10th anniversary celebration of the re-establishment of Quang Nam province. The provincial tourism department expects the National Tourism Year 2006 activities to attract at least 2 million tourists. (Source: VNA)
