Spill hits Binh Thuan beaches in Vietnam

15/05/2006 (GMT+7)

Binh Thuan beaches in Vietnam, for the past two weeks, beaches on the Ham Tien – Mui Ne coast in Binh Thuan Province have been covered with a thick black ”‘gravel” that bears signs of an oil spill.

Oil appears to have washed up on some beaches in the popular resort area, leaving patches of thick, black residue that cling to bathers’ feet.

Several resorts have seen a reduction in guests.

Many local visitors who booked rooms at around US$100/day also refrained from swimming due to health worries.

The slick stretches form Ham Tien – Mui Ne to the Thuan Quy – Ke Ga coast.

Authorities have no clues as to the source of the spill.
