Hoi An tourism: New laws to regulate tourism business operations enacted

04/01/07 (GMT+7)

New laws to regulate business operations in Hoi An’s Old Quarter is set to come into reality for the sustainable development and preservation of the world’s cultural heritage.

In the heart of the old quarter stands over 900 facade houses, among which 750 houses are used for tourism services. As a matter of fact, the densely emerging guesthouses have ruined the flair of tranquility that this old town once possessed and was famed for. The disordered arrangements and displays of billboards, shop windows and vendors have spoilt the overview of the old town.

Vice Chairman of the Hoi An Town People’s Committee Truong Van Bay said that they were ready to enact new laws in January 2007 to regulate tourism business operations in a more proper and strategic way. The new laws aim to increase the sustainable development and preservation of Hoi An Ancient Town, a world cultural heritage listed by UNESCO.

While putting the law into practice, the People’s Committee will rearrange the guesthouses, shopping malls in the whole town so that the open space of the old quarter can be preserved.

Accordingly, the density of guesthouses will be reduced to 65% compared to the current situation. More specifically, each street will have its typical tourism products to put on display.

The new regulations also stipulate that all the shopping malls are allowed to open until midnight, instead of closing before 11pm following the current law. However, they are required to make a commitment that their product displays and promotions will not harm the old town’s view.
