2006 – Successful year of Hanoi tourism

18/01/07 (GMT+7)

Hanoi tourism 2006 is an important year of Hanoi: the APEC summit was successfully held in Hanoi; Hanoi was voted as one of the 10 most attractive tourist cities in Asia by the Travel and Leisure magazine. The tourism sector of the city made great progress last year.

Nearly six million tourists visited Hanoi Vietnam last year, including 1.1 million foreigners, an increase of 11% against 2005. International arrivals in Hanoi were mainly from North-Eastern Asia, Europe and North America.

Turnovers from Hanoi’s tourism sector were estimated at VND 14,000 billion, 26.8% over that of 2005. The number of Chinese tourists to Hanoi is expected to rise in the coming time because cruise ship tours from China to Vietnam have re-opened.

In 2006, nearly 12,000 enterprises registered to do business in the travel field, over 7,000 enterprises more than 2005. This is viewed as a breakthrough in Hanoi’s tourism activities in 2006. It proves that tourism activities in Hanoi Vietnam are very exciting.

Last year, room occupancy rate at hotels in Hanoi reached 83%. However, while the number of international arrivals increased from over 500,000 in 2000 to over one million in 2006, the number of hotel rooms rose just about 35%, said Tran Huu Binh, director of Hanoi Tourism Department.

Hanoi now has a total of eight five-star hotels. By the end of 2006, the construction of two more five-star hotels started. This year, Hanoi is expected to call upon investment in five more five-star hotels to meet the rising number of tourists to the city.

Last year, Hanoi Vietnam also expanded its co-operation with other localities in the country to promote and develop tourism. So far, the city has signed co-operative deals with 19 provinces and cities.
