Vietnam Festival set to prop up domestic tourism
25/03/2006 (GMT+7)
Thirty-six companies have put their names down to join an annual festival designed to promote domestic tourism in Ho Chi Minh next month, said the organiser. The second Ho Chi Minh Tourism Festival Day 2006 organised by the city’s Service of Tourism at Dam Sen Park in district 11 from April 21 to 23 will focus to introducing tourism products to local visitors. The event will feature a tourism fair to be attended by travel agencies and businesses active in the tourism-related sectors, a program for hoteliers and eateries to show up their best specialties, and other activities such as amateur southern opera performances and folk games. There have been 68 booths booked at the fair, with most of them occupied by travel firms, said a source from the tourism promotion department under the Tourism Service. The service expects the number of booths to rise around 80 as the deadline for registration is April 10. The event is seen as an effort to push up domestic tourism, one of the city's major sources of income. This year tour operators in Ho Chi Minh CIty are expected to serve around 3.5 million local tourists, up 15% year-on-year.
Last year, the three-day tourism festival at Van Thanh Park attracted 44 companies, including 30 travel agencies, four Standard Tourism shops and five tourism schools, and about 20,000 visitors.
