Vietnam air routes see expansion

2011-06-02 (GMT + 7)

The first day of June has witnessed the inauguration of two new air routes which are expected to tap tourism potential in the south of Vietnam and boost growth in the key central economic zone.

Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO), now flies from Can Tho City to Con Dao island off southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, with four flights weekly at an estimated flight duration of 40 minutes each way.

Ideal for its geographic position in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho airport, which welcomes over 200,000 passengers annually, plays an important role in the socio-economic development of the entire region.

The new route is the second air link to Con Dao island conducted by VASCO. The first one, connecting the island with Ho Chi Minh City , was launched in 2004 and enjoyed an annual growth rate of between 40 and 45 percent with up to 28 flights every week.

Also on June 1, Air Mekong and Vietnam Aviation Corporation launched a new air route from Ho Chi Minh City to Quy Nhon city in the central province of Binh Dinh .

The flights will be conducted on a daily basis, making it the 11 th domestic air route run by Air Mekong.

Air Mekong began operations in October 2010 and now conducts 32-35 flights daily on three major routes from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City; from Hanoi to Buon Me Thuot, Pleiku and Da Lat in the central highlands of Tay Nguyen and to Phu Quoc island in the southern province of Kien Giang; and from Ho Chi Minh City to the central highlands cities of Buon Me Thuot, Pleiku and Dalat, and to Con Dao and Phu Quoc islands.
