Quang Nam festival focuses on heritage values

    2013-05-08 (GMT + 7)

Hoi An ancient town and My Son relic site, both the world’s heritage sites, will be open free-of-charge to visitors during the fifth Quang Nam Heritage Festival 2013, which is slated for June 21-26.

HoiAn_ancient_townThe move aims to lure more people to the Quang Nam festival, whose main activities will take place in the two sites in celebration of the 10 th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, announced a press briefing in Hanoi on May 7.
Hoi An was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Its building and its street plan reflects the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site.
My Son was chosen as the site for a religious centre for the capital of the Champa Kingdom. The sanctuary area is one of the most famous Champa architectural and sculptural monuments in Vietnam. It was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
According to Vice Chairman of the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee Tran Minh Ca, the two world’s cultural heritage sites receive millions of visitors a year.
The festival is a chance to promote the image of Vietnam in general and central Quang Nam province in particular in order to boost tourism and lure more investment in the locality.
To date, tens of domestic and international delegations have registered to attend the event, including those from ASEAN countries, Japan and the Republic of Korea.
An opening ceremony of the festival on June 26 will be broadcast live.
Within the framework of the event, there will be an exhibition themed “Vietnam-ASEAN Cultural Heritage Space” to feature many artistic performances to be staged by 200 local and foreign artists.
Other activities include the 3 rd International Choir Festival from June 19-26, a street show, the 3 rd Miss Ethnic Vietnam 2013 pageant from June 12-26 and the Art Festival for Vietnamese Ethnic Minority Groups.
On this occasion, Quang Nam has launched a host of tours to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, traditional brocade weaving villages and hamlets of Co Tu ethnic groups.
