New Vietnam destination to Russia

07/05/07 (GMT+7)

Vietnamese studies expert Darya Mishukova talked with Lao Dong newspaper about her book on Vietnamese culture and Vietnam travel, which has recently hit bookstores in Russia and attracted tourism investors’ attention.

New Vietnam destination to Russia

Before you, some have tried to write about Vietnamese travel. But it is said that only 5% of the information in those books was useful to you?

There have been 3 such books in Russia. But I looked at Vietnamese culture, cuisine and travel from a different angle. It is because the info about Vietnam in those 3 books wasn’t very accurate. History doctor Vladimir Kolotov in Saint Petersburg once told me, “After reading those books, I felt so tired of what people write about Vietnam.”

To Russian tourists, Vietnam’s a new destination. Many Vietnamese travel partners think Russian tourists are similar to German, American or French tourists. But it isn’t true. In Vietnam, no one has seriously studied Russian tourists’ needs. Thus, after visiting Vietnam, many Russians came home, complaining, “Vietnam Beautiful beaches, beautiful hotels in Vietnam, beautiful sunshine Vietnam, but Vietnam didn’t show anything unique.” And these people didn’t return to Vietnam.

I think, to attract the Russian market, Vietnam needs to understand Russians’ needs, dispositions, and culture in order to introduce to them what she has in an appealing way.

I have read a book in Russia about the old Quang Nam- Da Nang province. The language is wonderful, but the content was merely picked up and translated from tourism books in English or French. Thus, there is no line in the whole book describing beach games. The book is all about plant growing in the countryside.

So I wanted to write a book to tell Russians about Vietnam’s excellent dishes, happy atmosphere, beautiful sceneries, romantic beaches, sport games, well-equipped resorts, shopping centres and dance floors. Russian women love spas the most. And in my book, I used a light-hearted language to talk about my experiences on trips to Lao Cai, Quang Ninh, Hanoi, Hue, Quang Nam, Da Nang, Lam Dong, Binh Thuan, HaLong bay and Ho Chi Minh City.

What do you think about Vietnam’s tourism after those trips?

Vietnam has favourable natural conditions to attract tourists all year round. Political stability and security are also her advantages compared to other countries in the region. Many big tourism projects are attracting foreign investors.

Yet, the infrastructure in some areas is yet to meet tourists’ demands. For instance, once when I was in a spa, they sprayed hot water onto your face since their steam sprayers were broken. Asked about this, the manager merely said, “No problem, it doesn’t matter, sorry.”

I think it isn’t the right way to handle such a problem. Since I know Vietnamese, I did talk directly with the owner. But what about other Russian tourists who don’t know the language? To develop her tourism, Vietnam needs to focus on developing her human resources and tour design.

What interested you the most in your trips?

Of Vietnamese cuisine, I love Hanoi dishes the most, except shrimp sauce.   Of the sceneries, I love best the south. And the culture I love most is that of Hue city: Hue people and the architecture of its imperial palaces and tombs.
