Phu Quoc island (Phu Quoc picture) in the southern province of Kien Giang Vietnam, is gearing up to become a major regional tourism hub as foreign investors flock to pour money into the area.

Provincial People’s Committee Chairman, Bui Ngoc Suong said the province has so far received over 180 investment applications that are focusing on tourism.

The province has already licensed 12 projects worth close to 750 billion VND (46.8 million USD), and approved in principle a further 46.

Vietnam General Department of Tourism General Director, Hoang Tuan Anh said that the Phu Quoc island would be featured prominently in all national tourism promotion campaigns.

The completion of construction of the Duong To International Airport in 2010 is a prime example of a market stimulating infrastructure project, the tourist chief said.

A 50-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City, the island is hoping to cash in on its natural beauty, lush rain forests and pristine beaches.

Dubbed the 'Pearl of Asia', the island has seen a burgeoning number of visitor arrivals, yearly.

Provincial tourism administration head, Le Minh Hoang said the island last year welcomed over 102,500 tourists, one third of whom were from overseas. In the first quarter of this year alone, nearly 50,000 vacationers chose the island, over half of those tourists were from abroad.

Phu Quoc island has set a target of attracting 350,000 visitors a year from now until 2010 and between 2 and 3 million after 2020 when it is slated to have finished its tourism infrastructure development master-plan.

Phu Quoc island is the largest island in Vietnam; covering 56,500 ha. The island is rimmed by 99 hills and mountains, a chain of virgin valleys and superb beaches.
