07/04/07 (GMT+7)

Travellers can look forward to a festival celebrating 100 years of tourism in Sam Son District, located in Thanh Hoa Province Vietnam, at the end of the month.

Sam Son beach: Sam Son sea festivalGone wild on spring break: Sam Son Beach, in the central city of Thanh Hoa, which welcomes more than 500,000 guests annually, is expected to receive thousands more during its centennial, which runs from April 28 to May 1.

The festival taking place, called Sam Son: A safe and friendly destination, is scheduled for April 28 to May 1.

The event's goal is to promote development and tourism in Thanh Hoa Province's port cities, said Doan Van Phu, director of the provincial Department of Tourism.

Phu said the push on tourism, will also hopefully garner interest from foreign and domestic investors.

Organisers have planned a series of folk games, traditional rice cake and dumpling-making contests, stilt-sea walking, community dances and galas as well as sports activities like volleyball and tennis tournaments.

"Travellers can sign up for different tours around our province and get a chance to chat with famous people about Sam Son's history and development over the last 100 years," said Phu.

Thanh Hoa authorities have invested some VND60mil (US$375,000) in upgrading urban infrastructure along the sea to prepare for the festival including famous sites like Co Tien Temple, Doc Cuoc Pagoda, Truong Le Mount and Trong Mai Island.

Grounds for the festival, sports arenas and sea stages are set to be complete by the end of April.

The Mai Linh Joint Stock Co, with help from local authorities, donated VND1.5bil ($100,000) to festival organisers.

Sam Son District, home of the famous Sam Son Beach, is approximately 200km south of Hanoi.
