Independence Holiday of H’mong people

08/09/08 (GMT+7)

Every September 1, H’mong people from all northern mountainous provinces flock to the hub of Moc Chau district in Son La province to attend the Independence Holiday.

The Independence Holiday takes place from the morning on September 1 to the early morning on September 2.

Nobody knows when the Independence Holiday appeared but it has become a traditional event of H’Mong people.

Ho A Chong, a H’mong worker on Moc Chau Farm in Son La province, said: “My family comes here every Independence Holiday. We come here to see our old friends."

All H’mong people attend the holiday in their best clothes. Some of the suits take them a whole year to make. Even H’Mong people from Laos and Thailand participate in the Independence Holiday.

In the past, H’Mong only gathered in groups to talk while young people sought friends through singing and blowing pan-pipes. Nowadays, the Independence Holiday has many other things, such as souvenirs, traditional games and sports, etc.

“This is the fourth time I have attended the Independence Holiday. I love it because I can see and play tug-of-war,” said Giang Thi Mai from Van Ho commune, Moc Chau district, Son La.

“I like seeing the love fair, costumes of H’mong girls and their faces when they are moved by young boys. Looking at them I feel like I am young again,” said Tran Thi Thu, a tourist.
